Sound of Philips

Sound of Lightbulbs

An instrument created from the sampled sounds from Lightbulbs and the human voice. A concept that was created by the Creative Director at the time: Tommy Zee and the Strategy Director: Michiel Cremers.

We then extended it to a fully functioning Kontakt instrument. This is used when briefing out composers to ensure a certain consistency in sound. The instrument is proven to be very flexible and contains all types of textures - rhythmical, bass, pads, lead sounds, and SFX.

In the process over 150+ lightbulbs were harmed.

The Philips Soundlogo

A subtle 4 note melody that is played by the main sound from the lightbulb instrument. By having a melodic topline, played consistently in a distinctive sound, we enabled the brand te remain flexible enough to cater to different content / product categories whilst building brand recognition. We can adapt the tempo, the pitch, the genre - but the melody itself and sound always remain the same.

Synced to the visual animation of the iconic stars and shield. The logo is now life across the globe in 100+ markets.

The Music Bank

A selection of bespoke music - watermarked with the logo melody and infused with the lightbulb sounds. Can you recognise the 4-note melody in all examples?

The music was composed to the context of the various content that Philips produces across their product categories.

This music bank is accessible to all Philips employees and agencies. It offers a suite of pre-cleared tracks that are ready to use for all digital content. Furthermore they can be easily edited and tailored to executions.

Philips UI Sounds

Using the lightbulb instrument we crafted a set of UI sounds - a designed language - for UI developers to use for all products from Philips. Our creative rationale is that the sounds from devices are their literal communication to us.

The basis of all communication is emotion. As humans we use a lot of non-verbal phonetics in how we speak to communicate our feelings.

Inpsired by this we translated our human references into UI sounds. Plotted on a axes in intensity across the buckets of: affordance sounds, notifcations, alerts, start/ shut down, and celebration sounds.
